Fashionista Wannabe
I decided to take the plunge and get myself a girly outfit - kind of retro, since I’m just that kind of person. I came home with one headband, so today was a trying day to say the least. A gal likes to get out and buy herself something from time to time. Now, despite the fact that I’m 5 10, and not petite, I’m still a gal. Imagine then my dismay at having difficulty in finding things to buy myself.
At this time, clothes can be a little difficult. Having had my son only seven weeks ago, I know I will be losing weight and on a limited budget it’s hard to justify buying clothes I hope will only fit for a short time (even harder to buy them and admit it’s going to take longer than I think to lose the baby weight). Even more difficult is the fact that should I buy myself something nice, I have nowhere to wear it. And even if I had somewhere to wear it I’m at that difficult age of 30 something where you’re just not sure if you can wear those 20’s fashions but you’re not ready for the drab and dreary middle age clothes. And so, I’ll have to stick to the jeans and nondescript t-shirts for another few months. Blah.
Then I thought, well heck, I love shoes as much as the next gal . Shoes can be a wonderful form of self expression in lieu of fun fashion. Just look at those darling Mary Jane’s out there and you’ll see what I mean. Of course, as I’ve mentioned I’m a gal of 5 feet 10 inches with feet to match. My size 11s don’t often find Mary Janes. How depressing! I have some money and I want to spend it – on me(!) for a change and there’s nary a thing to buy.
Redefining your image in your 30s is tough! Why did I lose my personal style in the first place? I’ve been sick and tired of the plain clothes you buy at places like Old Navy forever but I just can’t decide what’s appropriate for me.

Awwww honey, I can relate to this., When I was pregnant, I went from tomboy (growing up in a male dominated household shaped that) to someone who wanted to wear PINK! That was unheard of in my life.
I couldn’t believe that and now, I am as girly as they come - glitter, sequins, embroidery on my clothes all gets my vote :D. When I do wear jeans and a t-shirt they are fitted to show off my figure; stretchmarks, drooping boobs and all, rather than huge and frumpy.
Like you say I guess accessories is the way to go if your budget is tight. I’m bit into girly handbags and I have got a collection over the years from eBay. Maybe that would work for you. Or things for your hair, jewellery or just, as you say, make up. You could try the mineral ranges of make up if you want to keep it natural and ethical like Lili Lolo.
I hope you find something lovely soon. I have no idea what size 11 shoes is; I would have thought that at 5 foot 10, you could find some amazing, dramatic clothes that will turn heads (if you like your height and walk upright instead of slouching
). Do kaftans appeal to you? They are the thing to be seen in over here - you can get them in beautiful colours and they hide midriffs, tops of arms and other non-descript areas LOL! Teamed with a slim pair of trousers you still have a practical but girly outfit or you could wear with a long floaty skirt……….
Hmmm, I hope you find those mary janes; they are so sweet………. Check out the crocs site, they have mary janes - in pinks, purples and the whole rainbow of colours. Not really girly, girly, but cheap, colourful, practical, as comfortable as Birkenstocks and they can be recycled at the end of their life.
Much love,

Mrs Green, you are such a sweetheart!
For now I might just play with accessories, but I love the ideas. I think I just need to work up the nerve to try things on that are typically out of my element. I might try the kaftan with slim trouser look, though the style over here is slightly different and instead of flattering kaftans there are almost maternity-esque tops I’m not sure I’m into at the moment. I guess they might be good to hide the midriff and upper arms too.
)
Anyway, I think it really is sometimes stepping outside your comfort zone - I mean jeans and t-shirts are comfortable and practical. Just not so flattering.
As for handbags, I have some cute knit and crochet patterns I might just try out. I made them for my neices for Christmas last year, so maybe I should just make one for me. (Of course, that was pre-baby when I actually had time!
Thanks again for the tips!

Oh I should say re: makeup - I have this theory that wearing makeup, or rather the act of applying make up can age you. Think of all the skin pulling and plucking - I would think that causes wrinkles? So I don’t wear anything except the odd moisturizer and sunscreen I put on whenever I remember. Results are inconclusive at this time.
Also, my study group is not very large - it’s just me.
I think maybe that’s just an excuse. Truthfully I feel as though if men don’t have to wear make up to look beautiful, why do women?

I’m totally with you on the make up thing. Fortunately, dh loathes make up and much prefers the natural look (just as well LOL!)
I agree that all the pulling when applying make up might just cause wrinkles, especially around the eyes. I find the taking off to be even more that way…….
Anyway, I’m happy, as someone asked me for ID to buy alcohol last year (I’m 35
:D ) so I can’t look that bad
Go and dig out a handbag pattern for your ‘be kind to myself’ month. prioritise the time: you’re worth it…
sweet dreams,
